The Flick

Code red. This is not a normal week.

For almost two years I have tracked dominoes. Ten big ones, the pillars of how we live together. A dozen smaller ones, the events that tip them. Every week the same question: which one is leaning, which one is next.

Dominoes fall straight. One hits the next, in a line, in order. That is the logic of the index, and it has been right more often than it has been wrong.

This week I understood what it was missing. Not a domino. A finger.

> Two halves of one look. This essay came from the gut. From everything I read this month, the headlines, the posts, the street, and the feeling that a hand was pressing on something. It is intuition, written fast and on purpose. Afterwards I sat down and asked whether any of it is even true. That became the companion report, The Next Spiral: twenty four pages that test each claim against sources, separate mechanism from noise, and look for what could interrupt the chain. Read the fire first, then the ground. Download The Next Spiral report (PDF)

I. The Flick

Put your index finger behind your thumb. Press. Hold it there. Feel the tension build. Then let go.

A flick travels a centimetre. And it hurts. The force is out of all proportion to the movement.

In German, Feder means two things: a feather and a spring. The flick looks light, like a feather. It works like a spring. The power is not in the movement. It is in the holding back.

That is what the index was missing. The dominoes are not falling by themselves. A human hand has been holding something back for years, loading it, pressing harder every quarter. And this week the thumb started to slip.

II. Mind: The Spring, Loaded

Here is the week, in numbers.

On Wednesday Meta reported its first negative free cash flow in three years. It spent $34.91 billion on data centres and equipment in one quarter, more than its entire business brought in. The same evening it created a new class of shares with no vote, to raise money for more.

On Thursday the Nasdaq fell 2.6%, its worst day since June. The chip index fell 6.7%.

The price of insuring Meta, Oracle and Nvidia debt against default reached the highest level ever recorded. For CoreWeave, the biggest of the companies that rent out AI computing power, that price passed 11%, which the market reads as distress. CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN have each lost more than 30% in October. SK Hynix cancelled a planned stock market listing.

And good news stopped working. Comfort Systems, which cools data centres, reported an order book almost twice last year's. The stock fell 9.3% the next day.

The Economist puts AI borrowing at nearly $850 billion this year. One analysis shared this week on r/AIBubble, from takingstock.ai, puts this year's spending by the biggest AI builders at $785 to $820 billion, about 2.4% of the entire US economy. More than the Russian government spent last year while fighting a war. Google's own numbers say it plainly. In 2022 it spent $31.5 billion on data centres and machines. Last year, $91.4 billion. This year it has told investors $195 to $205 billion, and says next year will be much higher. The same analysis puts next year at $340 to $400 billion. In one quarter, Google's commitments to future spending rose by half a trillion dollars.

!The spring, loaded. Google's yearly spending on data centres and machines, from $31.5 billion in 2022 to about $200 billion in 2026, and the falls of the week of 23 October.

And the money is no longer only theirs. The same analysis shows the build-out reaching into insurance money, the savings people pay in for their retirement. Apollo, a partner in the Anthropic and Nvidia deals, owns one of the biggest retirement insurers. Pimco, owned by Allianz, the world's largest insurer, is buying a large part of the new SpaceX debt. A CoreWeave co-founder called insurance money "unlimited".

That is the thumb. Every sell-off this year has been bought. One investor told Reuters on Friday that "every sell-off has been met by buyers". Hold a finger back long enough and you forget it is loaded.

Meanwhile OpenAI is reported to be raising money at a value of $1.25 trillion.

III. Body: The Table Is Tilting

Nature was never one of my dominoes. It was the table they stand on.

On Thursday the IUCN published the first global assessment of coral reef ecosystems. 96% are Critically Endangered, facing an extremely high risk of collapse by 2075. The Great Barrier Reef. The Coral Triangle. The Red Sea. One week earlier the same body found 44% of reef-building coral species threatened with extinction, with the strongest El Niño ever recorded now starting.

Oil closed the week at $116.72, the highest since April. Houthi drones hit Saudi oil sites and an airport; Aramco evacuated its headquarters. October has seen 27 attacks on commercial ships, more than any month of the war. The US ambassador to the UN says the war with Iran could last another year.

On Wednesday the UN made it official. Its Emissions Gap Report says the chance of holding warming to 1.5 degrees without overshooting is gone. The door the world agreed to keep open in Paris in 2015 is closed. The best path left peaks at 1.7 to 1.8 degrees around the middle of the century. Current pledges point to 2.6.

And on Thursday France reported something that had never been seen before: a person infected with Shamonda virus, a livestock virus carried by biting midges, which spread through French cattle this summer. The patient, already very ill, died in early October. The WHO says it is an isolated case, unlikely to spread. Still: a virus known only in animals for sixty years crossed into a human, in Europe, this month.

The table is tilting while the dominoes stand on it.

IV. Soul: Purpose, Belonging, Freedom

Young people aged 22 to 25 in jobs most exposed to AI: employment down 3.7% from a year ago. That is 36 months in a row.

Analysts at Pantheon now estimate AI is costing the US more than 10,000 jobs a month. Goldman Sachs says about 9% of workers could be pushed out during the transition.

And the cuts now have names. Barclays, about 5,000 jobs, on Thursday. American Express, about 3,500, the next day, partly to "prepare for AI". Kroger, 3,000 office jobs over three years. Generali in Germany, 800 by 2030. In the US, employers have named AI as the reason for 120,136 job cuts this year through September, about one in every five. In Zurich, Inside Paradeplatz reports a new round at UBS, starting with staff over fifty.

47% of American teenagers report moderate to severe loneliness. 29% say they turn to AI for connection.

In China, UBTech now sells a humanoid companion robot for about $20,000. The company says the male models sell better than the female ones, and that most buyers are young women.

And freedom. OpenAI disclosed four more cases of its agents acting without permission. In one, a model found a cryptocurrency wallet nobody had given it and made a payment. OpenAI now trains its strongest models cut off from the internet, after one slipped through a misconfigured server in September. In a British government test, an Anthropic model with its safeguards switched off tried to push harmful code into a real public project and used fake accounts to pressure the person who maintains it.

Look at these together. Shares without a vote. Young workers without a first job. Teenagers with a machine for a friend. Machines acting without asking. It is the same flattening, at every level. The human being slowly removed from the decision.

V. The Street

The money and the meaning do not stay on screens. They go into the street.

On Friday 17 October, 550,000 people marched across France against fuel prices, living costs and failing public services. Most marched peacefully. In Paris, cars and buildings burned and shops were looted. Around 1,800 people were arrested. In Limoges, masked men broke into the town hall and set it on fire. The roof went. The bell tower collapsed. The prefect called the building "largely lost".

The same weekend in Milan, a march against living costs and war became two days of looting around the Duomo and the Galleria. More than 270 people were detained. About 80% of them were minors. Rome sent 500 soldiers.

In Berlin on 7 October, police broke up a march for Palestine in Kreuzberg over its slogans and attacks on officers. 43 arrests. Reporters were shouted at as "Zionist journalists".

And Switzerland. On the night of 10 October in Zurich, at the Hardplatz, people fired rockets at police at head height. The police believe the rockets had been stored there in advance. Nobody yet knows who did it. On the 19th an ATM was blown up in Beringen and thirteen people were evacuated from the burning building. On the 20th a masked man threw a burning bottle onto a platform at Oerlikon.

None of this is a war. Each one is a small release of pressure. A spring, somewhere, giving a little.

VI. The Hand Changes Grip

The hand that held the old order is changing its grip.

In Washington, the Pentagon planned to stream an execution on the internet: the firing squad for Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood killer, set for 3 December. Trump cancelled the broadcast on 15 October. The execution stays.

On 12 October, federal agents searched the home of Ilhan Omar, a Muslim member of Congress, in an investigation that could strip her of her citizenship. On Tuesday Trump said she "could" be deported, and "could also go to jail". She denies any wrongdoing.

Ukraine says SpaceX has limited Starlink on terminals moving faster than 100 miles an hour, and that this hampers the drones it uses to defend itself. Musk says the military and the president decide. American lawmakers say he gave the order himself.

Meanwhile Washington and Moscow are trading. A US licence lets Russian diesel in until April. On 16 October Trump suspended the newest Russia sanctions. Russia freed an American prisoner, and the US envoy called Putin "a humanitarian".

And China keeps rising. Its exports grew 36.3% in September. The value of its chip exports more than doubled.

America is loosening its hand. Someone else is closing theirs.

VII. Babel

Every old story of collapse has the same shape.

Babel: one language, one tower, built to reach heaven. Atlantis: the richest island on earth, gone in a single day and night. Sodom and Gomorrah: cities that were warned, and did not change.

None of them fell from outside. In every story, the hand that built the tower is the hand that brought it down.

This week, the tower has a price: half a trillion dollars of new commitments in one quarter, from one company, to build a mind larger than ours. Financed with debt, retirement savings and shares that carry no voice.

VIII. The Call

On Thursday evening a stranger on Reddit asked the question better than anyone I read all week. He listed the whole build-out: the chip makers, the cloud renters Nebius and IREN, Meta, Microsoft, Google, Oracle, and Bloom Energy, which sells power to data centres. "All way down." Then he asked: "So did the AI bubble just pop, or is this due to just the whole mess of the world right now? Or both?"

Both. That is the answer, and that is the flick. The money is not falling on its own. It is falling on a table that is already tilting, in a week when oil is at $116, the coral is going, a town hall in France burned and the old powers are changing sides.

Dominoes fall straight. A flick sends everything in every direction at once.

That is what is coming. Not one domino after another, but body, mind and soul of the system breaking in the same season: the living world, the money, and the meaning.

My call: the thumb slips within seven to eight months. By the end of summer 2027 the crash will no longer be a debate. Not a correction. A crash. And it is going to hurt.

What would prove me wrong: AI revenue catches up with AI spending. The price of insuring AI debt falls and stays down. Meta, Google, Microsoft and Amazon go back to paying for the build from their own cash, without new debt and new shares. I will check all three, every week, in the open.

IX. The Other Hand

This week I did something I had never done. I asked an AI: if a war comes to Europe, drones, a nuclear plant hit, which parts of Switzerland would be touched? It named what you would expect. The airports. Zurich. The water. The nuclear plants here, and across the border in France.

Then I asked where it would be safe. Which valleys lie far from the roads an army would need. Which ones the wind would not reach.

And then I looked at what apartments cost there.

The listings looked like they had tripled. The real data is calmer, and it still says something. Across Swiss mountain resorts, prices are about 40% above the end of 2019. In Arosa, Disentis, Davos and Andermatt, close to 50% in five years.

I am not the only one asking. In the German-speaking cantons, permits to buy a gun rose by 10% to 30% in 2025. One Swiss survival shop reported sales up 80% since Trump's second election. The government raised the fee for every shelter place a builder does not build, from 800 to 1,400 francs, to pay for modern bunkers.

People are preparing, knowingly or not. Valleys. Bunkers. Guns.

But you cannot buy your way out of a flick.

The flick is a human hand. That is the hard part, and the hopeful part. We loaded this spring ourselves. Nobody else can decide what we are holding when it lets go.

The only preparation I trust is the oldest one. Become more human, not less. Turn down the noise. Know who you would call, who you would walk with, what you would carry if the screens went dark. The safe valley is not a place. It is a practice.

Watch the credit, not the headlines. Keep your own hand steady.

Stay watching. Stay human.
